Hi, the experimentation is one of the things that i really enjoy about doing concept art, using different textures and defining volumens by the ilumination. This thumbnailing procces helped me to find out good shapes through the siluets. This is a rude procces but cleary helpfull into the design method used for the current calendary. Based on the Chineesse mithology and the Dragon´s year, this is going to be a quickly fluent year, and that is the reason why i have decided share with you one creature per month. this is the first of 12 Dragons created for 2012:
Hola, una de las cosas que mas me gusta de hacer concept-art, es expeimentar con el diseño de criaturas, el trabajo con texturas y trabajar el volumen con la iluminación. Este proceso es el llamado ¨thumbnailing¨, un proceso que me ayudó para definir con manchas rápidas y siluetas en busca de la forma. Este proceso rudo y tosco se amoldó claramente al tipo de exploración para crear una serie de animales en el calendario de este año, un año de cambios acelerados y con un flujo dinámico y agradable, por eso propuse varias opciones para los meses de este año, para cada mes compartirles una criatura. Por eso acá les comparto el proceso del primero de los 12 Dragones del 2012:
After having the siluets done, i chosed this one because it is one of the most dynamic, one image closer to the Dragons shapes united with the movement generated by water. This election was the next key for chosing the lights sources and textures.

Después de generar las siluetas, escogí esta por ser una de las más dinámicas, la más parecida al fluir del agua y al signo, quise para empezar el año mostrar una combinación entre el Dragón, lo cual después de este paso me sirvió para proponer luego la iluminación y las texturas.
In this image, each deatil was overlayed on the sketch, using custumized brushes, and looking for different values, grayscale and color schemes.
Cada detalle desde la bocetación fue superpuesto con trabajos de pinceles, buscando escalas de grises, paso a paso, y buscando detalles paso a paso.
The grayscale had different light sources, one of the objetives was that the Dragon itself was one of them. That is the reason why i worked changing tones and textures in order to understand lighting in a darker ambient.
El trabajo en escala de grises hizo que buscara la fuerza por la iluminación, esta imagen en particular tuvo variaciones en las fuentes de luz, por que quería que el mismo Dragón fuera una de ellas, por eso trabajé cambiando los tonos y las texturas en función del comportamiento de la luz en un ambiente obscuro.
The color procces was quite easier, it just took me time for chose the color scheme based on photograpies of animals in the deep sea, using the tint ranges, one per one in eache zone.
El trabajo de color fue un poco más sencillo, solo tomé la paleta derivada de fotografías sobre animales en el fondo del mar y la utilicé como un matiz para cada zona.
The final touches and details were put looking for a realxed inside the water ambient, an stronge shape for the animal, and the whole concept mixed in just one image.
Los detalles fueron puestos parte por parte , buscando ambientar la criatura en su medio y mostrar un clima relajado y fuerte al mismo tiempo, como union de los dos conceptos en el agua.
Finally i made my mind up for this result, using the Chinesse Dragon´s simbology to send my celebration card as a gift for my contacts . I hope you have enjoyed it and share my work with your own contacts. I wish nothing but the best for all of you, have a great Dragon´s year!!!
